I love a good story especially one that is written by a great storyteller. Two Way Mirrors appeared to be a story of a young woman in love with the typical bad boy but readers soon find out that is all on the surface. The story follows the tale of Angela Delimar a young lady who shares a close bond with her mother, is in love with her incarcerated bad boy and does things she doesn’t care for the world to know. Through a series of events which include deep family secrets and breathtaking brutality Angela finds herself fighting for not only her life but for her sanity. She is in a race to find out the one woman who can expose the truth and help Angela heal but will the ever elusive stranger come from out of the shadows long enough?

I loved how well the story was told. There were scenes that literally had me flipping the pages anxious to know what would happen next. There were also some scenes I could have lived without such as excessive details at the most inappropriate times. Overall I would rank Two Way Mirrors a 4 star **** read and I think it’s a read that doesn’t disappoint. Excited to see what else this author can come up with.

Q: You were at one point a teacher which is very different from being the owner of a well-known publishing company. What made you change your career path?

I sort of fell into publishing.  I was pregnant at one point during my teaching career and received news that I had to be put on bed rest. That took me by surprise, especially when they said, “Six months!” A family member suggested that I spend my time wisely, by writing a book. I took a stab at it and penned my first novel, “A Life to Remember,” while on bed rest. I had just finished my Masters in Education so it was a bitter-sweet moment when I decided not to go back to the classroom. I created Life Changing Books (LCB) and sold 5,000 copies of my novel so quickly through my distribution channels that I knew, I had embarked on a new career.

Q: You’re not only the owner but also a successful writer with titles that has gained you much attention. Which of your titles are you most proud of or count as your best work?

My novel ‘Bruised’ is closest to my heart. It’s based on a true story and always makes me feel like I’m watching a Lifetime Movie when I discuss it. It’s gritty yet informative. It’s also a piece of work that doesn’t put me in a box. People of all ages can relate. My most successful title in terms of sales has been “Daddy’s House”. People love sex, drama, and craziness, so I guess it hit the spot. LOL

Q:  Life Changing Books has shaken the urban fiction publishing world with some of the hottest titles around. Did you always know you wanted to own a publishing company?

I never wanted to be a writer or own a publishing company. I’ve always been an entrepreneur even while teaching, so I knew I would always run companies, but not at this level. LCB became successful rather quickly and became my passion even quicker. I began meeting motivated authors like Tiphani , who penned The Millionaire Mistress Series and J. Tremble wrote Secrets of a Housewife early in the company’s history. From there, the company skyrocketed because my authors really wanted to become successful.

Q: Many writers are interested in learning what it takes to be selected by a reputable publishing company. What are you usually looking for in a writer?

We want unique stories. It seems that every book on the shelf is similar to the masses. Also, at LCB we normally look for writers who have researched the industry and know how to do the basics; have a properly formatted manuscript, have a pre-mature marketing plan, and come with the passion to become a best seller.

Q: How many titles has Life Changing Books Publishing Company published so far?

To date, we’ve published 86 titles; 10 of which are National Bestsellers and 1 New York Times Best Seller (Game Over by Winter Ramos).

Q: What’s next for your company and its league of writers?

We’re super excited over here at LCB.  Some projects we can’t discuss at the moment but will eventually blow your mind. Let’s just say, we haven’t stopped at producing books. We have one book series that is headed for TV.  In addition, a few books have been turned into scripts. There’s so much more. Check out the behind the scenes here.

Q: Where can fans, readers and writers alike find out more about you and your company?

LCB is everywhere! We love our readers wholeheartedly. Contact us at  www.lifechangingbooks.net

I wanted to keep my loyal readers, authors and followers updated on the happenings of Urban Fiction News. Being an author takes A LOT of hard work, energy, diligence, sacrifice, blood, sweat and tears. It invokes labor pains, loss of friendships, marital discord and I can go on and on (I promise) however, it won’t be in vain. Urban Fiction News is taking things a bit further by crossing over into an online magazine.

Not only will authors have a new platform to promote their books and book covers but will all have an opportunity to participate in book trailer wars, (competitions) author spotlights, interviews and so much more. Authors interested in being one of the first to be interviewed on the online magazine platform should email me @ urbanfictionnews1@yahoo.com. Q: Legacy Publishing Grp is spearheaded by none other than Michael McGrew. How did you get started in the Urban Fiction publishing game?

As a youth my grandmother used to read Donald Goines books all the time so reading has always been in my family but didn’t get into the game until 2008 after deciding to write for a living. Urban Fiction to me is the gritty reality of the black community. Similar to the ghettos of little Italy and the mob stories. It’s just our tale of the street. Starting my journey was a challenge though and I learned a lot to get where I am today.

Q: It must also be noted that you are the author of such titles as “My kinda Girl” “Room 111” and “Taking Losses.” Being an urban fiction writer means you understand its challenges. Where do you see urban fiction going in the future?

I see urban fiction diversifying into more colorful characters and optimistic backgrounds. The drug dealer plot lines are thinning and getting too boring. The game needs change like life as it progresses in my opinion.

Q: When reading your bio which can be found on Authors-Rock.com I noted a few of your struggles which it seems are paramount in writing a good urban fiction story. Would you say your past has made you a better writer?

I would think so, before I began writing I would consider my experiences as research, so yes it has and definitely getting better.

Q: Is Legacy Publishing Grp only interested in publishing urban fiction titles?

Not at all, in fact we’re moving forward with children’s, self improvement and teen fiction titles.

Q: What can viewers expect from you in the coming years?

Great success, with our relationships growing in Hollywood we are positioning the company to transition into film and television also while maintaining a leading position in trade paperback sales as well.

Q: Where can authors and readers of urban fiction find out more about your publishing company?

It’s been great having you on Urban Fiction News Any last words of wisdom?

The Mind of The Person is Often Unknown to The Person Who Has the Mind. Be who you choose to be but be prepared for challenges, rejection and the doubt that may attempt to throw you off course. It’s a test to see if you deserve to board the vessel of your blessing.

If you are looking for a grisly tale that will cause you to cover your mouth and shudder with disbelief than take a look at “Who am I? The Chronicles of Cain” The story starts off with a bloody telling of the death of our main character’s parents. It quickly leads you down the path of mystery, betrayal and death that can only be told by a cold-blooded killer hardened by past and present experiences. Cain walks his reader into a guessing game that had me on the edge of my seat. My wanting turned into a need that drove me to complete this story.  I was often taken aback by the sheer graphic details of Cain’s ruthless and brutal methods of murder. His name carries enough weight that grown men shudder and plead at the thought of being on his bad side. His bad side is the one place no one is considered safe.

Overall I would rate this story a must read. It isn’t for the faint of heart or people with weak stomachs. You get a raw story not painted with pretty words. The author does an excellent job of igniting fear in the hearts of their reader and I often thought how I would react if faced with the very mysterious, charismatic and highly dangerous main character Cain. I loved how the author ended each chapter with a slightly poetic letter written by the main character. The only thing I could live without was the many metaphors used in the story. The story itself was good enough to stand without the metaphoric comparisons. Non the less it is a book you will want to read a few times as it has the “learn something new” effect many books lack today.

Your Urban Literature Muse for Line Editing, Content Editing, Reduction Editing, Proofreading, Copy Editing and self publishing services for Independent Authors

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Mary McBeth from Urbanfictioneditor.com who was very gracious in answering my questions. I love providing my reading audience with a bit of professional wisdom that will help them in their literary journey. So if you are a writer of the Urban Fiction Genre or a fiction writer looking to learn what it takes to become a literary success read along.

Q: Please introduce yourself and your company to my reading audience. What is it that you do?

My name is Mary McBeth, and I am the founder of UrbanFictionEditor.com where I help authors develop their manuscripts through extremely obsessive editing, consulting and marketing advice. I also support them in the development of their Brand through marketing consultations, and the creation of marketing materials, such as logos, business cards and website design; often these are just the natural results of my editing services.

Q: What made you decide to build your business around urban editing?

I love Urban Fiction, and it is my personal pet peeve that good stories often do not receive the attention they deserve, and ultimately the chance to make their impact on society as a whole. I was raised in Brooklyn, New York (a prime Urban Fiction setting), and it personally offends me that the Urban Fiction genre is so often belittled, and misunderstood due to (what I see as) the use of words and the presentation of those words.  I feel I have something unique to offer to the genre, and I often liken it to the music industry where you might be a good rapper, but you still need a heck of an excellent studio technician in order to be competitive. Publishers are the producers. And if you self-publish, guess what? You are now a producer and you better be good- or hire the right people if you want to be credible and make hits.

Q: Are you a lover of the urban fiction genre and do you think it can be a competitive literary market?

Oh yes! I love urban Fiction. As quiet as it’s kept, this IS already a competitive literary market, and I think it will become more so in the future. Few people realize that the genre is extremely broad and that it already outsells mainstream fiction at all the major publishing houses.  The Urban Fiction genre encompasses: Street fiction, Crime fiction, Vampire stories, Urban Fantasy, Erotica, and more. What’s the difference? That depends on whom you ask. Right now, as far as I can tell, Urban Fiction is what each person says it is…for better or for worse. There’s a lot of chaos associated with this genre, which could be good or bad, depending on what we do with it.

Q: Urban Fiction is becoming increasingly popular in the literary world. With that popularity comes a variety of challenges. What would you say is a major challenge urban fiction authors face today?

Credibility. Selling each other and the genre out. Being open to change.  Also, confusion and lack of a system of standards that can differentiate one style from another, or one level of author (expertise-wise) from another. As a former assistant librarian, I continue to work with publishers, libraries, and bookstores to establish new, clearer, guidelines within the genre itself.

Q: There are many mainstream or traditional editors catering to the masses of “traditional genres” why is it important for an urban fiction author to seek out an urban fiction editor?

Well there are so many reasons, first of all, we editors are a pretty myopic bunch; we pretty much read all day and become totally engrossed in our authors’ dramas (both literally and figuratively!). We don’t get out much, so to speak! Lol! That means an editor who enjoys reading Science Fiction, probably makes that their specialty and wouldn’t necessarily be aware of what was going on in other specialized genres, like Street Lit or Urban Fantasy.

In the case of Urban Fiction, the problem is two fold – genre and culture. Urban Fiction is a culture as much as a genre. This makes it an extremely narrow specialization, like medical writing.

For example, the best Urban Fiction editors should know current idioms of speech, as well as be avid readers of mainstream fiction. It’s like translating a foreign language- you cannot do so competently if you only speak one of the two languages involved?

Ideally, editors of Urban Fiction should have a solid grasp of today’s Urban Culture, as well as historic African American Literature, and mainstream literature overall, in order to assist authors in producing their best work (work that is attractive to the public and ideally, to mainstream publishing houses), as well as work that credits the genre. The problem that traditional publishers have with Urban Lit is not the content, it’s the presentation.

What we are doing here is creating and documenting our history- as it happens. It doesn’t matter if it is fiction or non fiction- future generations will construct an image of what it was like during our time- just as we do today with authors such as Chester Himes, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin and Iceberg Slim. That goes for all kinds of Urban Fiction: Street fiction, Vampire Stories, Urban Fantasy, Erotica, whatever.  Urban Fiction Editors have got to be able to see the big picture.

Q: I’m sure as an editor you face a variety of common grammatical errors. What would you say is the most common error urban fiction authors make?

Homonyms, hands down! There, their, and they’re. Way, weigh. Wait, weight. To, too, two. Soul, sole, etc.

It makes my job interesting, but these are a huge red flag for traditional publishers, editors and agents. It tells them that you are guilty of committing what I would call: the cardinal sin of prose…professing to be a serious author, while leaving clues in plain site that you do not read very much. The assumption is if you make such basic errors, you may not have the skills to tell a good story.

But, in all fairness, it’s a persistent misconception that writers are good spellers and such. A subliminal perception that even seasoned industry professionals hold. Writers have to tell stories. Period. Believe me that is hard enough to do. Writers don’t have to spell or have perfect grammar- that’s what editors are for. Lol!

If the quality of your writing is good and this is your main problem, a good book to read is Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynn Truss.

Q: What makes your company different from other editing services?

Simple. We truly care about our authors’ success! Writing is a lonely road and writers need lots of support to make it. For me, editing is a deeply conspiratorial process, and we give so much to our clients that we just cannot take on everyone. Therefore, we are only interested in the author who is serious about making a cultural impact with their writing and pursuing a long-term literary career. But, even if we cannot accept you as a client, we will tell you the truth and give you advice about how you can do better.

I personally handle each client as a product in themselves (not just a book), considering their career, and overall presentation in helping them make the impression they desire. To do this, I may edit their work directly, coach them to produce better work, write their query letters, design their business cards, logo, website and advise them on Social Media marketing, if needed, even introduce them to publishers when appropriate.

Q: Many self-published authors catch a bad rap because their work isn’t polished or “presentable” enough to compete with traditionally published authors; what would you say self-published authors can do to become more competitive in the literary world?

To them I would say presentation is everything in sales of any sort. If you want someone, other than you wife or mother, to purchase (and write a positive review) of your novel – get yourself a reputable editor. Now.

The Urban Fiction book market is saturated with good story ideas, told in bad grammar. Even if your ideas are great, you just cannot compete without writing that is perfect.

If you think your cousin should edit your book for free, then you just do not understand what it is that professional editors do. Consider this conversation I recently had on Facebook with a client who’d hired me to write her query letter- a writer of New Age Non-fiction who, although knowledgeable about her field and a prolific self-published author – was not getting any sales:

Mary Angi McBeth
 ”btw. Who edited your book?

”

Client: “no one! i gave my books to two very knowledgeable ppl. they read it and made some comments and that was it!… I don’t have an editor…:((

Mary Angi McBeth
” well…how can I say this…very knowledgeable ppl. are good proofreaders….but editing…takes a lot of time (valuable time) and involves taking things out, changing wording and adding explanations where needed….knowledgeable ppl don’t do this for free…and may not even know how to be critical of content…knowledgeable ppl don’t necessarily know how to do a tarot card reading, even if they know the history of tarot… that takes knowledge, but more important, it practice and dedication, the same goes with any field  of expertise.

Editing is not about knowledge only

Mary Angi McBethIt is about reading like a maniac for years and years, it is about criticizing and obsessing over each line of text, in an effort to turn a jingle into a symphony. It is about knowing that genre and what sells in that field, doing research where necessary, and asking the writer to give everything and then a little bit more. It is a Virgo dream job. Not a friend’s favor.

2:22pm

Mary Angi McBethA friend might change your oil on your car or fix a flat tire for free…. But it is not reasonable to expect them to change your transmission, rebuild your engine and give you new body work in a couple of days (or even weeks) and for free.

That is what editing is: an overhaul. Not spell checking. Computers can do that.“

Now, How much can you pay someone to tell you the truth? The hardest thing you will ever do is judge your own writing objectively.

Even prolific authors like Steven King and James Patterson have editors.  You would be surprised how much of the last book you read was the result of the collaboration between author and editor. Its two different things that go into those best selling results: right brained and left-brained, creative and critical. A good editor is your coach, cheerleader and co-conspirator. You can do spell check all by yourself!

Forget your family’s well-meaning comments right now; you needed their support in the beginning, to get the writing done. Now you need the support of people who know what sells. In order to take your book to the next level, get top-of-the-line editing and publishing services and unbiased advice.

Is it going to cost you? Yes. Sorry, but just like you can’t drive a Mercedes Benz for the price of a bicycle. Your new home design just won’t stand up without a competent architect checking those numbers and physics before you build; and learning how to play the piano doesn’t make you Mozart. Be real.

It takes years of hard practice to become great at anything and even then- you still need an editor and you just can’t compete with your “smart friend” editing your books.

Do your research, and when you find an editor that speaks to you as an artist, put them to the test. Get a sample edit, as with any other service, know that when someone tells you they are an editor, that does not mean they are any good, nor does it mean they will care about your work.  Traditionally published authors have professional editing, and not from editing mills either, but from real people they trust, to polish their work, discuss their ideas with, and who help and advise them to become better writers.

An unpolished cover will never stop a great self-published novel from succeeding and eventually finding its way into the hands of traditional publishers . Still, the next best thing self-published authors can do for themselves it to recognize that unless their day job is as an art director or marketing person, they probably are not the best person to design their own covers.

Q: What can writers do to receive a quote on your services? How can they find out more on your company?

To receive a quote for my services, writers can go to http://urbanfictioneditor.com/samples/  And upload a 3-page sample to be edited free of charge.

Thank you for this opportunity to share my passion with you.

Best wishes and keep writing!

Monster

I am always up for a good read and when I came across Monster by Ben Burgess Jr the subject matter caused me to reach out for an interview. The book tells a story about a “good guy” gone bad. Ken Ferguson was devastated emotionally by the love of his life. He also suffered low-self esteem brought on by years of being called ugly for his dark complexion. His hurt finally turned into revenge. Unlike the traditional pay back he sought to sexually use and abuse every woman he could get his hands on. He grew more and more detached and only cared about getting what he could with as little emotional ties as possible. The story is a powerful read for black men who find themselves being caught in the middle of both a good guy and a monster. Enjoy the interview by Mr. Burgess.

Q: In your story Monster you touch on a subject that is often overlooked or bypassed by many African American’s. You touch on skin color as it is most often not talked about as it relates to self-esteem. What was your inspiration when coming up with your storyline for Monster?

Monster is based off my life experiences. When I was younger I was very insecure about being dark-skinned. I think psychologically when I grew up and became more appealing to women, I felt I needed to constantly prove to myself that I wasn’t the “ugly” little boy that I was in the past, but a handsome, confident man. I feel that people really don’t understand the effect it has on a dark-skinned person when he/she is teased about the color of their skin by their own people. I feel that writing this booked help me to take readers into that world. They may never feel what it’s like to be teased and tormented about their skin color, but hopefully reading my book will make them think twice about teasing someone, help them to understand how the victim feels, and if they are dark skinned themselves, understand that they are not alone.

Q: I liked your ability to show your leading character’s vulnerability. You get a real sense of how “good” he is as a person in general. Your character went from being a good guy into being a “monster” seemingly overnight. Was it your intention to show how weak he was before he became a womanizer? Or was that done to show how extreme his transformation was?

I wanted to show that under the wrong circumstances, anyone can become a monster. Ken’s family life, his childhood, his dating experiences, and his own insecurities all cultivated his transformation into becoming a monster. I tried to show that Ken gets progressively worse. He starts off “weak”, but not necessarily bad. He still has a conscience. As the book goes on he becomes heartless and ruthless.

Q: How big a role did your character’s skin color play in his being ‘weak’?

I think it played a big role because it reopened a wound that bothered Ken. “It took years for me to become secure. While you may learn from the past and move on from the past, you still remember it. Sometimes the past hurts, and Bri reminded me of those times. I wasn’t secure or confident anymore. What had taken me years to fix about myself, she destroyed in a matter of weeks. “I feel that if a person is insecure and has emotional scares the way Ken did, it will affect their behavior in some way. It was because of his insecurities that I feel makes Ken too nice “Once I started to go through puberty, all I wanted was to be liked by girls. I did everything to please them. I gave them the little money I had, candy, and anything they asked for because I wanted them to like me. My first sexual experience was in the sixth grade when I went down on my friend Michelle. Even though I did whatever the girls asked, none of them wanted me. Some of them still made fun of me despite everything I did for them.” Some of his heartbreaks were caused by woman taking his kindness for weakness.

Q: It’s not often readers get an explanation behind a womanizer’s actions. Your character suffers from low self-esteem, and multiple broken hearts that leads him down a path of sexual revenge. If there is a message to be learned from his experiences what would it be?

I put my heart and soul into all of my writings. I constantly try to improve to become a better writer for myself and my fans. The message that I try to instill in my writing is, as people we should always strive to be better. We should always want to become better versions of ourselves. I also want people to see that whether they like it or not, no one is perfect. At some point even the “good guys/girls” aren’t so good. I try to make my books very realistic.

Monster” is based off my life and experiences. After enduring some pretty interesting experiences, I believe that “Monster” is a story that can benefit everyone and it’s a story that needed to be told. I was inspired to write it to teach people. I feel that people can learn from my mistakes. I wanted people to learn that:

  1. 1.    Every action has a consequence- It can be good or bad, but there is a result for everything we do.
  2. 2.    We need to take time to truly heal emotionally and mentally after a break-up. If we don’t we are bound to bring that pain into future relationships.
  3. 3.    We need to be conscience of our actions. We never know the effects they can have on other people.
  4. 4.    In order to move forward in life, we have to learn to let go of negativity, and to forgive ourselves.

Q: How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing since the 8th grade. When I was in the 8th grade, my English teacher Mrs. Marcus gave the class a poetry assignment. My poem was on basketball. I don’t remember what I wrote, but I remember my teacher was blown away by it. She encouraged me to keep writing. She was one of my most influential teachers, and I promised her if I ever wrote a book, I would write a poem about the Holocaust for her (She was Jewish, and had family in it) my dream was to publish a book. I continued to write throughout high school and college. My college professors told me I had talent, so I decided to go to open mic’s and perform my poetry. Hearing people cheer for me and appreciate my words, inspired me to want to keep writing. My first published book was “Times Have Changed and Life is Strange.” It was a poetry book. I wrote a poem for Mrs. Marcus called “Holocaust” keeping my promise. The poem “Ugly” from “Times Have Changed and Life is Strange”, is the poem that inspired me to write “Monster” I reflected on my life, and felt this would be a good story that would teach and possibly change people’s lives.

Q: What can readers expect from you in the future?

You can look forward to me constantly working on new books to stimulate people’s minds. I’m working on my next book “Love and Happiness”, and I plan to have it published by February of 2014

Poems from Times Have Changed and Life is Strange

UGLY

There’s a darkness inside me that’s hidden deep

within my psyche; that causes me to act in a

behavior that’s unlike me. I have turned into a

lustful monster that conquers to alleviate my

emotional hunger, preying on women like a hunter

to add to my sexual numbers. Always on guard,

this side of me is a mask used to put up a façade,

disregard and protect me from the feeling of being

empty. I spent many dates gazing into eyes and

holding onto hands. My only plan was to add to

my statistic of one night stands, and becoming

legendary in women’s beds. I messed with many

heads to get them to spread their legs and relished

the feeling of being intimate. No longer into it, my

feelings for the situation become intricate while

she is still smitten by the way I caressed her. My

feelings changed the moment I undressed her.

Under no pressure, I address her with full force

showing no remorse as I tell her I felt nothing and

this was all just a fling. To me she didn’t mean

anything. I could have never been committed. I

didn’t have to wonder why I did it. The answer

was simple; I just wanted to “hit it.” I slept with

many women, some I didn’t even remember their

names, but no matter how many I slept with I

29

could never get rid of that initial pain. Back then

“she” had manipulated and hurt me so I decided

to show no mercy and do the same, let women

feel my pain, and become a player in this game.

Her method of deception left me suspended in a

state of depression, affecting my judgment and

affection. I was wounded with emotional scars.

From bathrooms in bars to backseats of cars, I

would just go with the flow with anything that

would tempt me. I would have sex and hop to

the next and still feel empty. After my heart was

destroyed, I felt that all of those women would

help fill that void, and make everything clearer,

until one day I didn’t recognize myself in the

mirror. What have I done? What monster have I

become? How could I ever expect anyone to love

me, with my heart being this ugly? When did my

heart turn to stone? The path that I was leading

was deceiving and would eventually leave me all

alone. What I did was wrong and was done with

evil intent. I decided to forgive myself as the fi rst

act of atonement. I have now grown and stopped

being vindictive and trying to “get them”. I have

stopped feeling like a victim and have returned

to the man I was supposed to be, forever keeping

that evil part of me in captivity.

THE COLOR OF MY SKIN

My childhood memories are chapters in my life

that I want closed. I got made fun of because of

my color and plain clothes. I looked in the mirror

and I wasn’t that dark to me, but all the other kids

filled my life with such misery. It hurt me deep

inside and the pain felt lethal. What made it worse

is that it came from my own people. I was laughed

at and tormented and would have done anything

to change my color. Everyday I would cry on the

shoulders of my mother. I would pray and hope

that God would make my skin lighter. I did stupid

things like bathe in scolding hot water, just to

make my skin brighter. I hoped the water would

burn off my color and my sorrow. I felt today

was messed up and hoped that all would change

tomorrow. I hated myself with my beady eyes, big

lips, and big nose. I wished I could just start over

and disregard all of those. I was tired of being

nicknamed tar baby and midnight, developed a

temper now everyday I was in a fi ght. In my heart

I knew violence wasn’t right and fi ghting wasn’t

the answer, but my own self hate was eating me

alive like a cancer. I prayed to God and he sent

someone to open my eyes, it came in the form

of someone white to my surprise. She told me

“your skin is the color of dark chocolate, which

is the sweetest, and its taste is divine, your skin

is beautiful and I love how it differs from mine”. It

shocked me because she liked everything about

me from my full lips to my nappy hair and after

that day no matter what anyone said I didn’t care.

From that day on I would let life experiences be

my teacher. I was proud of my nappy hair and

my strong African features. Even though I was

mentally stronger, those feeling I had before I

couldn’t totally forget. Society had instilled that

in me and it will always have a negative effect. I

know now my skin is beautiful, my skin is pure, I

finally see that now despite all the pain I had to

endure. No more will I feel sorry for myself, want

pity, or someone to blame. I love myself now and I

am no longer ashamed. I’m happy and now my life

can truly begin. I love myself right down to my full

lips to my dark brown skin.

I wanted to take a moment to go over the Urban Fiction Genre. Urban Fiction is a rapidly growing genre written in an urban setting with predominately black or latino characters. It provides readers with an in your face depiction of city living that ranges from murder, adultery, cheating, prison, violence and sex all of which are glamorized sensationally.

The urban fiction genre gives writers an opportunity to challenge their imagination, create over the top characters with even larger than life situations.
